The Intimacy of Manifestation in Hoodoo
There is no karma in Hoodoo; our work is “karma”; you are the redeemer
Oftentimes, when we think of manifestation, we envision a process where our mind's eye brings our desires into the physical realm by simply meditating on what we want. Many people seek quick fixes, thinking they can use an oil or perform a ritual, and their manifestation will arrive. However, it's not that simple.
The process of manifestation is far more intimate than it may seem. Manifestation is a process of embodiment, requiring us to root ourselves in the feeling, energy, and spirit of the manifestation itself. It necessitates freeing ourselves from mental, physical, and spiritual blockages that we may have accumulated along our journey. You can’t embody your manifestation if you have no room to receive and handle it. The process isn't linear, and it's certainly not as easy as putting things into the universe and expecting them to come back. There is no karma in Hoodoo; our work is “karma”; you are the redeemer. It requires delving deep into your shadow, healing, and releasing trauma. It demands honesty and presence in your thoughts, the building of self-belief, and an understanding of the worthiness of your soul. The process is gritty but God is with you every step of the way.
This is why we recognize Hoodoo as a faith-based practice. Without faith in God, journeying through the shadows and believing in the unseen would be difficult if not impossible. So, our foundation is healing—a process that requires continuous integration. In life, one thing you can guarantee is change, always ebbing and flowing. However, the practice of Hoodoo is meant to help you navigate these changes as you manifest your destiny. It offers a real praxis to navigate trauma, healing, poverty, racism, and psycho-spiritual blockages. Indeed, it is a key to liberation for me. We recognize that life itself is a personal quest toward our destiny, and it's up to us to decide how we work with the cards we’ve been dealt in a society that doesn’t care about the true legacy and freedom of Black people. Using simple yet powerful sacred workings and practices can bring forth great change in your life because you become a literal manifestation of the Holy Trinity. It’s no longer about proving yourself to anyone outside of you, but about proving to yourself that your dreams are possible.
Being in mentorship has taught me that Hoodoo is mental alchemy above anything else. And this is why healing work is so crucial and fundamental. Healing reframes your thinking, subsequently shifting the way you relate to yourself, the world, and your circumstances. If you are not intimate with your inner world, how can you effectively relate to the outer world to manifest from a divinely guided place? More importantly, in this context, how can you manifest the desires of your heart if they're clouded by the traumas and chaos of past pains? As above, so below. As within, so it will be outside of you. Manifestation is an inward process—a dive into aligning what you see in spirit or your mind's eye with your practice and actions. You want to be as free of overthinking, trauma, and chaotic emotion as much as possible. It involves traveling through the subconscious, facing the repressed, and alchemizing it to bring forth healing and, subsequently, a new reality where the desires of your heart are feasible. This happens over and over again especially in the beginning of your walk.
There is a principle in Ancient Kemet that came from the divinity Tehuti (better known as Thoth) that states, “All is Mind; The Universe is Mental.” It is a principle that still reigns true within the practice of Hoodoo and its relationship to manifestation. To help me get more intimate with my mind and sense of self, I’ve dived deep into shadow work, frequently cleansing, praying to God, healing patterns, reframing my thinking, getting knocked upside my head by spirit, and communing with my ancestors and incorporating more spiritual tools into my routine.
For the folk who are wondering how to start implementing Hoodoo spiritual tools into your routine, I highly recommend a brand known as Mystikal Onyx. I grew so in love with her Traditional Hoodoo newsletter and products. They’ve helped me tremendously, so I recommend the following:
Queendom for my ladies seeking to root deeper into the bliss that comes with loving themselves on a deeper level, while bringing mental clarity about who they are and where they’re going.
Straight Out Ya Third Eye is an intuition oil to strengthen your relationship with your mind's eye so you can be more in tune with what is truly for you and what isn’t the truth of matters as they come up in your life.
Allure for my folks who seek to engage in glamour work for a deeper sense of self-love.
I also implore you to explore how new oils like Nirvana Liberation: Black Spirituality Without Apology, Van Van, Matron, and Mahogany Essence can further enhance your relationship to yourself, your bloodline, and your practice to bring forth major manifestations and change.
I truly wonder what our world could be like if more of us did the gritty work of healing in connection to our ancestors.
